This wine is 100% Viognier from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley. This vineyard was planted in 2005, and this particular Block was planted on a North by Northwest steep hillside slope. This vineyard has been farmed from the beginning using Biodynamic techniques, and in 2009 was Demeter Certified. The Viognier clone that we planted comes originally from the La Jota Vineyard on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley by way of the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in Los Olivos.
2015 was a very warm vintage and Harvest came early…these grapes were harvested on August 21st, about 3 weeks earlier than normal, at 22.9° brix, 3.31 pH and 8.4 acidity. The Edna Valley is a cool growing area, and even in this warm vintage, yielded grapes with perfect balance.
The grapes were whole cluster pressed, chilled over night in a tank, then transferred to neutral French oak barrels for fermentation. As with all of our Biodynamic wines, it was fermented with native yeasts and allowed to naturally go through malo as well. It was aged on the lees for 8 months.
This is classic cool climate Viognier that leans more toward the mineral side but still shows that classic floral and honeysuckle aroma. In the mouth it is totally dry with an elegant, spicy note. As this is an aromatic white, I recommend drinking it within the first 3-4 years after the vintage.
