The 2013 Qupé Grenache is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley. Planted in 2005 this vineyard was established using biodynamic farming methods, and was Demeter Certified Biodynamic in 2009.
For this vintage 33% whole clusters were stomped in an open top fermenter before de-stemming, and native yeasts were allowed to encourage primary fermentation. The wine was then aged on the lees for 18 months in neutral oak barrels, followed by a winemaker barrel selection process to rack off the best juice for the blend.
Stylistically this is a cool climate Grenache, handled more like a Pinot Noir in the cellar to preserve a light body and structure. Delicate aromas of brilliant red cherry transition into elegant flavors of raspberry, cranberry and toast. Best served slightly chilled with grilled king salmon dishes, this wine is approachable now and will age gracefully over the next 5-8 years.

Score 91 points/Editor's Choice: "This is a delicate yet flavorful take on this grape, from a biodynamic, cool-climate vineyard. Light red plum and hibiscus aromas meet with sweet herbs and cinnamon spice on the nose. The lithe palate offers candied strawberry with thyme, anise and touches of garden herbs, with that red fruit flavor carrying deep into the finish. Would pair great with spicy food."
