This wine is 100% Syrah from the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in the Los Olivos area of the Santa Ynez Valley. This is a vineyard that was originally planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1971 by Charlotte Young and Miguel Ibarra. In 1986 we began leasing the vineyard from Charlotte and farming it ourselves with help from Miguel until he retired after the 2012 Harvest. In 1999 we started farming it organically.
2013 was an excellent vintage. The fruit was de-stemmed into small open top tanks, and punched down manually twice a day. The wine was aged in neutral French oak barrels for 13 months.
Ibarra-Young is a slightly warmer site than Bien Nacido or Sawyer Lindquist, where most of our single vineyard Syrah comes from. This is a more forward expression of Syrah showing more of the red fruit character accented by sandalwood and cardamom. With softer acidity than our cooler climate Syrah’s, I recommend drinking this wine a little younger, say 5-8 years after the vintage.
