Our estate Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard is located in the cool Edna Valley of southern San Luis Obispo County. The vineyard is certified biodynamic with each wine carrying the Demeter stamp on the label. 100 percent Syrah, this is a blend of five different Syrah clones from three distinct blocks.
In 2011 we started harvesting our estate Syrah on October 17th finishing on November 1st. 2011 was a low pH, high acid year at Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard. There were 14 different lots representing different clones, different blocks and different degrees of ripeness. Each lot was fermented separately in small open top fermenters with most containing some percentage of whole clusters.
The cuvées were aged separately for 20 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new. Shortly before the 2013 harvest, a rigorous barrel selection was done to determine which lots went into this wine. Once the blend was complete, it was bottled in August 2013.
This is a savory, spicy, meaty Syrah with a noticeable edginess from the whole clusters. It is a much more complex wine than past versions of this wine, and not as accessible. I recommend putting this away for at least 6 months before you think about drinking any...this wine will easily go 10-15 years in the cellar.
