his wine is 100% Syrah from the Z Block at Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley of northern Santa Barbara County. Z Block is a custom block that was planted for us in 1992 on a steep, southwest facing hillside slope.
The wine was made using the same techniques that we have used for this wine every year since 1994…small open top fermenters, manual punch downs, saignée barrel fermentation for about 10% of the volume, and aging for about 20 months in Francois Freres Burgundy barrels – of which about 50-60% are new.
This is pretty textbook BN Hillside Syrah showing spicy, savory aromatics with a nice dollop of toasty mocha from the oak. It is deeply colored with well integrated flavors of blueberries, cola and hints of black pepper. The acidity is in good balance and the palate is plush. The alcohol is in check at 13.3%. This wine shows pretty well already but will easily reward 10-15 years of bottle age.
